Sandridge Barton, 'Figgie Daniel' Col Fondo
England, 2023
Sharpham—now known as Sandridge Barton—has been quietly producing wine in Devon since the early 1980s and is now one of the most exciting names to watch in English wine. This bottle comes from their small-batch, experimental range and is a personal favourite. It’s got that drinkability, freshness, and character that makes you want to share it.
Made in the Col Fondo style (Italy’s traditional method for naturally sparkling wine), it’s bottled with its lees, giving a soft haze, a gentle spritz, and a little savoury depth. You’ll find appley character and zesty citrus, maybe a touch of elderflower, with yeasty notes underneath. Super dry, with some texture and a lovely rustic edge.
Pop it in a cold bucket and serve it to friends who think English wine is all posh fizz — this will surprise them, in the best way.
